Karura Girls Dormitory
Diana was dumbfounded after she saw the conditions at the girls' dormitory at a school in Nairobi, Kenya. The shocking revelation led her to realize how fortunate she is. “Many people today do not appreciate and take advantage of the blessings they have.” Diana knew that she did not want to be one in the ungrateful mob so she began to do something proactive. Her project is determined to improve the sanitary conditions at the current dormitory, and construct a brand new dormitory as well. By organizing fundraisers and other events Diana is instilling values of peace and hope while also helping her native country and its citizens. Moreover, Diana encourages patriotism by taking a firm stance against the more accepted school of thought, tribalism. The concept behind this is that people need to focus on the bigger picture i.e., the nation as opposed to the minutia i.e., the tribes. “We have to be able to get out of our comfort zones for the good of others.” As of now, Diana’s project has bettered the lives of 200 young women and will touch an additional 500 when construction of the new dorm is completed. Recently, Diana visited the site and was ecstatic to see that the building’s foundation was nearly finished. The endeavor is ahead of schedule and phase one is expected to open within the next year.
