Urban Farming

Urban Farming began in 2004 and is headquartered in Detroit, Michigan. The international 501(c)(3) planted the first three gardens in 2005 and in that year gave away one ton of food, partnered with Starbucks, The City of Detroit, The Dorfman Family Foundation and Forgotten Harvest, among others. Additionally, the charity received national attention on the Montel Williams Show six months after sowing the first seeds in 2005.

In 2006, Urban Farming became the official charity of Atlantic Records and expanded into New York, Los Angeles, Minneapolis/St. Paul, St. Louis and Montego Bay, Jamaica. Last year, Urban Farming planted the equivalent of 160 gardens across the country and abroad, fed an estimated 30,000 people, and expanded into Newark, NJ, Atlanta and New Orleans.

Urban Farming received national and international coverage in 2007 in USA Today, The Los Angeles Times, The New York Observer, CNN's Health Minute with Dr. Sanjay Gupta, ABC's The View with Barbara Walters, numerous radio programs throughout the U.S., every news channel in Detroit, every major newspaper in Detroit and several in surrounding areas. Fox 2 News Detroit is an official sponsor of Urban Farming.

The mission of Urban Farming is to eradicate hunger by planting gardens on unused land and space while increasing diversity, motivating youth and seniors, and optimizing the use of land for the production of food and alternative fuel.
