Matthew Septimus

Matthew Septimus is a professional photographer who actively uses photography for outreach purposes. He first taught in 1989 at a South Bronx church. In a makeshift darkroom his young students used cardboard pinhole cameras to document their environment. He has since taught at the New School University, the International Center of Photography, and The League Treatment Center. In 2001, he co-taught the first photo workshop for Unseen America to Latin American migrant workers at Stony Brook University. In 2004, he participated in a cross-cultural workshop on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. Matthew is a Trustee Emeritas of The Hall Farm Center for Arts & Education. He is also on the advisory board of Unseen America and the Exposures Cross-Cultural Youth Arts Program.


His professional assignments include documenting the construction of the new MoMA, open-heart surgery, wild gorillas in the jungles of Uganda, fishing villages above the Arctic Circle, Nobel laureates, celebrated chefs and behind the scenes for the New York Jets.


He resides with his family in Brooklyn.
