"Rafiki Club"
Stella's project "Rafiki Club" ("friendship" in Kiswahili), seeks to educate and raise community awareness about poverty, disease and gender equality through the use of dramatic arts. Stella believes that the more women know about the world, the more control they will have over their bodies and the choices they face every day. She writes, directs and acts in community plays that educate others about important issues. The play she is currently working on aims to educate the community about girls' circumcision customs and how such customs spread HIV/AIDS. The drama maintains the importance of traditions, but insists that bad practices, such as those that jeopardize one's life and well-being, should be altered. It also shows the importance of a girl's right to attend school and the importance of women in society. As a result of her bold initiative, her school administration has begun using drama as an educational tool, and many have been exposed to her discussions. Stella hopes that her project will empower girls and women, allowing them to develop their own personal talents.
